Senegal buys KT-1 turboprop combat-trainer
According to the South Korean media, South Korean aviation corporation Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has announced on 19th July 2016, about signing the deal with Senegal AF for deliveries of 4pcs turbo-prop KT-1S combat-trainer. Other details of the contract are undisclosed. For KAI it will be the first sale of aviation technology to the African continent.
Turbo-prop driven KT-1 Woongbi has been in serial production since 1999, and it is widely believed to be unlicensed copy of the Swiss PC-9 turboprop combat-trainer. So far, South Korean Air force has acquired 105 frames from serial production (85pcs KT-1 and 20pcs KA-1). It has been sold to Turkey – 40 pcs KT-1T; Indonesia – 17pcs KT-1B and Peru – KT-1P. Thus, Senegal has become 4th foreign customer for KT-1.
It has been reported, that in April 2013 Senegal has ordered 3 pcs of Brazilian Embraer EMB-314 Super Tucano, which is comparable to KT-1. The credit for the Senegal was supposed to be given by Brazilian Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Economico e Social bank. However, until today those aircraft were not delivered and it is evident that 4 pcs of KT-1 are purchased instead.
