Russian Aerospace forces have brought US pilots to nervous exhaustion
One of the US generals has complained about how many problems the Russian and Syrian aviation cause to the USAF. And the problems are purely psychological. As a result, pilots literally beg the command to open fire. In general, we are talking about local lobbying. But the consequences of such "discomfort" can be bitter. In his interview, US Air Force General Charles CORCORAN told Military magazine that the USAF pilots had requested three times to shoot down "suspicious and dangerous" Syrian jets during the last month. In all three cases, the "defenceless aviation" of the USAF like the tankers, immediately left the area, as the Americans feared the actions of Syrian or Russian jets.
"We are trying to engage in de-escalation in SYRIA. We are here to fight with the IS, but we will defend our aircraft from Syrian government forces, "said CORCORAN. However, the general did not list any examples of attacks on US jets by Syrian Arab Air force.
We remind, that on Sunday, June 16th, the US coalition F/A-18F warplane shot down the Sukhoi Su-22 fighter-bomber of Syrian Air Force. And on Tuesday, June 18th, US coalition once again attacked the Syrian pro-government forces: the UAV of an Iran-backed militia was shot down. After that act, Russian Ministry of Defence ceased to cooperate with Washington in the framework of the memorandum on the prevention of incidents in SYRIA. Furthermore, it has announced the intention to track and target any aircraft of US coalition in the zone of combat missions in the SYRIAN ARAB REPUBLIC (SAR) by means of its air defence systems (S-300; S-400 & Pantsir).
It was reported that after the incident with the shot down Su-22, the US coalition aviation significantly narrowed the geography of flights. However, then the geography was again expanded.
Brigadier General of Aviation Charles CORCORAN is generally a talkative man. He is based at United Arab Emirates (Al-Dafra base), commanding the 380th Expeditionary Air Wing, which mainly consists of tankers, cargo and AWACS aircraft. All these large aircraftdo not carry any weapon systems and need constant cover by fighter jets.
Crews of tankers are nervous and complain about difficult working conditions. If any Syrian or Russian jets appear, then the aircraft of the 380th AW are forced to scatter. In this case General CORCORAN designed himself the "spokesman" on behalf of mentally suffering pilots.
At the beginning of the year he complained about the Russian Aerospace forces in the Wall Street Journal interview and asked for something to be done with the situation, which is unacceptable for his subordinates. Then General CORCORAN argued that the Russians were "risking", because they did not see American planes on their radars. They allegedly behave unprofessionally, do not react to signals and prefer to fly almost a few meters next to each other, in order to talk in a voice or even use gestures.
According to CORCORAN, "Russians rarely change course," that is, they do not turn when they see an American plane, which is why Americans are forced to change course. "We do not know what they see or do not see, but we do not want them to crash into us," the general explained.
At the same time, he categorically does not like the Russian-American agreements of prevention of air incidents in SYRIA, although no one seeks his approval on political issues at all. To the general, according to his own words, it's time for his pilots to hire psychotherapists, and not to comment on the position of the White House and the higher command.
Overall, CORCORAN is a young general and, allegedly, he participates in combat missions himself.
Earlier, it was reported that the old Syrian Su-22 was able to repel the initial attack of the US F/A-18E with the help of infrared decoys, although US jet attacked the Syrian fighter-bomber from about half a kilometer at point-blank range. "The question is: how did the Su-22 pilot evade the AIM-9X with flares, considering the modern infrared seeker installed in AIM-9X?" asks US expert Dave Majumdar. He emphasizes that despite the fact that the AIM-9X is a modern missile, it does not match the declared performance statistics during a real battle. As a result, the Syrian aircraft was brought down only with the help of a more powerful AIM-120 AMRAAM missile.
All this is still unproven and rather controversial. For example, AMRAAM is utilised at greater distances, according to the instructions and no one has tested their effectiveness in dogfight.
In general, American pilots have little experience of aerial combat with an equal opponent. The aircraft of Saddam's IRAQ and YUGOSLAVIA can not be considered as such by definition. That's why when they see Russian jets, the crews of the 380th wing fall into depression.
They and their boss, Brigadier General Charles CORCORAN, emotionally pushes the higher command to allow the US fighter jets to demonstrate aggression towards "those Russians." The command doesn´t approve such actions for quite understandable political and diplomatic reasons and recommends to approach a psychologist. Outdated Syrian Su-22, heroically resisting as best it could has become just the tip of the iceberg.
All this psychological trauma has nothing to do with real politics. Freedom of speech guarantees General CORCORAN the right to pressure the world around him, using the right-wing press. The right of the High Command and the White House to either not respond to this, or, finally, send him a psychologist, or send him on holidays.
Extreme fatigue and psychological exhaustion is a real fact in the ranks of the US armed forces, including USAF. And with this in mind you have to act, otherwise rumours about "Russian frenzies" in the air will one day lead to trouble.
