Morocco interested in Su-34 and project "AMUR - 1650" class submarines
Morocco is discussing possible sale of export version of the most modern “project 677 LADA” submarines, says “Izvestya” newspaper, citing high-ranking source inside the defense industrial complex. Also, according to the Moroccan mass media, Rabat has expressed its interest towards acquiring Su-34 frontline bombers, which have proven their capabilities in Syria. The experts say, that Morocco has all political reasons for acquisition of Russian weapons, however, the deliveries of “LADA” class submarines are highly unlikely before 2020. The main feature of this class of submarines is air-independent power unit. Other countries, such as Oman and Jordan have also expressed their interest in Russian aviation technologies. „Algeria will turn to French, American and Chinese weaponry, in hope to retain supremacy in armed forces, while Morocco has become interested in the products of Russian defense industry”, said Nikolay Sukhov (Николай Сухов), representative of the African Institute of the Russian academy of sciences and vice-president of the international club of observers of Middle Eastern affairs.
As the representatives of the defense military complex explained to the “Izvestya”, the question of acquisition of “LADA” class submarines by Morocco deserves additional expertise. The main reason for this, is that “LADA” submarines are complicated from the point of view of exploitation and maintenance, and understanding, if the buyer can exploit all their features in full extend. Russian navy has only two such submarines: one is undergoing trials and 2nd is under construction. Thus, “LADA” class submarines are not even in the arsenal of Russian Navy fleet, and it would be dangerous to offer such technology for sale, before it finishes its trials. Export version of “LADA” class submarines is called “project AMUR-1650”.
