Lebanon to receive Russian military hardware
Lebanon hopes for activation of the projects for supplying tanks and rocket artillery systems from Russia in the amount of 500 mil. USD, in the forthcoming future. This statement was given to the RIA Novosti news agency by Lebanese state minister for presidential affairs, Pierre RAFFOUL. Lebanon has started to recover from the two years long political crisis, by electing ex-general Michel AOUN as president and forming new government. Lebanese ambassador to Russia, Chawki Bou NASSAR, has confessed to the RIA Novosti, that his country is interested in supplies of Russian military equipment, for the war against terror. In particular, Beirut is interested in ATGM „KORNET“, howitzers and T-72 tanks. NASSAR has also confirmed, that the evaluation is being led on expert level. „There is a project, worth around half billion USD, aimed at strenghtening Lebanese army, by acquiring Russian equipment, including tanks, rockets and artillery systems. We hope for initialization of this process, in the current atmosphere“, said RAFFOUL. He added, that Lebanon and Russia agree on the major strategic issues, including war on terror. The oil industry is also key sector of mutual interest of Beirut and Moscow. „Russian companies were among the first to offer their participation in the tenders for supplying oil and gas, along with others, while some of them had already established consortiums“, said minister. He added, that this issue will be discussed in forseeable future.
